MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - The family of the 14-year-old charged in the shooting at Madison Jr/Sr High School released a statement on Wednesday.
"We are devastated by Austin's actions at school on Monday," the statement of James Austin Hancock's family read. "We pray for the immediate recovery of the injured students and for the healing of the entire community."
Hancock was arrested in a field near school grounds shortly after emergency crews responded to the school after reports of an active shooting situation inside the cafeteria. Two students suffered from gunshot wounds and two other students were injured in the incident.
Hancock is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of inducing panic and one count of making terroristic threats.
"Our family has lived in the this community our entire lives and we never expected anyone to experience the event that occurred on Monday, and we certainly did not expect that one of our family members would be involved," the statement continued.
The family said they are praying for everyone involved, including James Austin Hancock, who the family said they still deeply love.
"Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for all of the support that has been shown our family and community," the statement concluded.
