Anguilla: Kara Sewell's Island Tips

FOX19 -

My latest travel adventure took me and my husband to Anguilla (British overseas territory). The trip to the eastern Caribbean left us desiring to explore more of the island; with 32 beaches and sand that feels like silk we will be back.

We were not familiar with Anguilla, fortunately, our friends (who visit often) hosted us for the weekend and shared their favorite spots so I’m passing them on to you.

Sandy Ground: Near the middle of the island

Eat dinner at Sandbar – unique, fabulous tapas; try the jalapeño mojito

Relax at Elvis’ Beach Bar – sports bar on the sand; try the loaded nachos, ask for ‘drink of the night’

Party at Pumphouse – late night, LIVE reggae music

Mead’s Bay: home to Island’s 1st hotel

Grab lunch at Blanchard’s Beach Shack – up scale beach food (on the beach), snack on the creole fries

Stop by Malliouhana Resort – sit on their patio for a rum cocktail or glass of wine before dinner

Straw Hat (West End Village) – brunch with a breathtaking ocean view

Shoal Bay: Top 10 best beaches in the world, bring your own snorkel gear

Gwen’s Reggae Beach Bar – live scratch band on Sundays, enjoy jerk chicken, ribs & rum punch

Cove Bay: great views of St. Maarten

Smokey’s at The Cove – BEST rum punch, LIVE music, try the creole shrimp (yummy sauce)

Beach is perfect a long walk

Suggestions:

  • Best Buy is a grocery store on the island’s West End, pick up floats or noodles so you can relax in the water
  • Consider renting a villa (not as fancy as it sounds) so you can make some meals at home
  • Pack a cooler so you’re not buying all your booze
  • LOTS of SPF 50!
  • Anguillans take American dollars
