NEW YORK (FOX19) - The Xavier men's basketball team gets their shot at revenge.
Just 12 days after Seton Hall dropped the Musketeers in New Jersey 90-81, the two teams will meet again in the Big East Tournament semifinals Friday night.
No. 2 seed XU dominated Marquette on Thursday, leading by as many as 28 points, en route to a 90-72 win to advance to the semis. Xavier was led by sophomore Trevon Bluiett's career-high tying 24 points.
The third-seeded Pirates (23-8, 12-6) had a tougher time with the Creighton Blue Jays. Sophomore Khadeen Carrington finally put Seton Hall up for good with 50 seconds to go in the game. The Pirates were able to ice the game with free throws in the final minute to win 81-73.
Seton Hall features star sophomore guard Isiah Whitehead, who is averaging 18 points and 5 assists a game. But it is Whitehead's sidekick, Desi Rodriguez, that may be the key for the Musketeers to shut down. Rodriguez averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds in the two games against XU this season.
In game one at Cintas Center senior forward James Farr dominated in the post leading to a 84-76 win. Farr had 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Game two showcased a Musketeers team coming off an emotional high after beating then No. 1 Villanova. At the time, the Pirates were desperate for a marquee win to show-off to the committee on Selection Sunday. Seton Hall rolled to a 45-26 halftime lead. The Musketeers could not overcome the deficit, despite scoring 55 points in the second half, losing 90-81.
"I thought we played a great game that game," Seton Hall's Carrington said of the second contest. "We just got to focus on beating the 1-3-1 they play. Once we get out and go I think we can beat anybody"
Xavier and Seton Hall take the Madison Square Garden floor as the second game of the semifinals around 9 p.m. Friday night. You can catch the game on FOX Sports One.
