Iowa hit by tornadoes; Snow triggers avalanche

The transition from winter to spring is not coming easily. Storms producing hail, high winds and at least five tornadoes have ripped across north-central Iowa.

Also reporting damage are parts of Wisconsin and Illinois. A woman near Osage, Iowa, says she was sitting on a couch in her mobile home when she heard a "horrific roar" and things started blowing past the window. Jo Gudmonson says it took her breath away.

In western Colorado, a late-season snow storm has dumped a foot of snow on Rabbit Ears Pass near the ski resort of Steamboat Springs. A bartender at Smuggler's Brew Pub in Telluride says winds are blowing the snow sideways. He says he's glad he didn't have to drive to work. An avalanche shut down a Colorado highway yesterday. Nobody was hurt.
