Koppel to Leave ABC

Ted Koppel to end his stay at ABC

One of the best-known faces and voices at ABC News is leaving. Ted Koppel says when his contract is up at the end of the year, he'll leave ABC News and its "Nightline" program. Koppel has anchored the show for a-quarter century.

ABC News President David Westin says he and Koppel talked over "a number of options" in which Koppel could have stayed at the network. But, he says Koppel thinks "this is the right time for him to leave." Westin says he's optimistic "Nightline" will continue with an orderly transition.

The show has been sliding in the ratings and appeared under threat three years ago when ABC tried to lure David Letterman from CBS.
