Faithful remain in St. Peter's Square

It's nighttime in Vatican City but hundreds of faithful remain in St. Peter's Square. The two windows of John Paul's apartment are lighting up an otherwise darkened Apostolic Palace. The pope's vicar-general for Vatican City plans to preside over a recitation of the Rosary in the square.

The crowd includes an American student on vacation in Rome -- Tripp McLaughlin. He says the videos of John Paul when he became pope showed him "so alive, so excited to be here." McLaughlin says, "Now to see him break down is just really sad."

Rome police say they expect hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to arrive in the city over the next few days. The area around the Vatican will be closed, and police will be deployed to airports and train stations to help pilgrims move around the city.
