Crews set date to recover car from Ohio River

CAMPBELL COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

More than one week after a car plunged off the Combs-Hehl Bridge, authorities have set a date to recover the vehicle and possible occupants from the bottom of the Ohio River.

The recovery attempt will start Saturday at 7 a.m., Campbell County Police announced Thursday.

Search efforts were suspended last week because of safety concerns related to the rising river. Heavy rain could still impact the current of the Ohio River. In that case, officials say, the recovery will be rescheduled.

The Boone County Water Rescue team will use a vessel, barge and crane to lift the car from the river, according to initial plans detailed last week. Divers will also attempt to located and secure any occupants of the car, should they be found.

Four separate accidents happened on the Interstate 275 bridge on March 15. The vehicle, believed to be a red Pontiac Grand Prix, was pushed to the side and off the edge of the bridge.

Police have been contacted by the family of a missing person believed to have been driving the car. The individual typically travels across the bridge and owns a red, mid-2000s Pontiac Grand Prix – the same car model described by witnesses of the crash.

Police said the driver’s identity would not be released until the body and vehicle have been recovered from the bottom of the river.
