NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

Officials recovered an estimated street value of over $11,000 worth of marijuana Wednesday.

An officer with the Newport Police Department said he smelled something funny after he pulled over Cameron Wimzie Wednesday morning near West 11th street.

Officer Jason Gabbard found about six pounds of marijuana in the car Wimzie was driving.

Police said he was using a rental car rented by a relative.

Police allege Wimzie was driving at a high rate of speed when be rolled through a stop sign.

Officer Gabbard followed him to a home on 11th street when the suspect admitted to having a small amount of the drug in the car.

“We opened up the consul and we found a digital scale, money and a small container of marijuana,” Gabbard said who stopped the vehicle around 10:30 a.m. “We also located in the backseat of the vehicle a large white garbage bag sealed up. When we grabbed the bag and opened that up there was a large amount of marijuana in that bag.”

Wimzie is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. He currently has no bond.
