Take Back the Night: Clothesline Project

FOX19 -

In an effort to raise awareness about sexual violence and its victims, the 27th annual Take Back the Night event will begin at the mouth of the Purple People Bridge on the Cincinnati side at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14. The event focuses on the ongoing problems of sexual violence in our community in hopes of becoming part of the solution, part of the end to sexual violence.

The group will then march across the bridge and to Newport Levee near the Aquarium. At the Aquarium they will have MUSE, One Billion Rising, Speaker Jeff Thomas and will conclude with a candlelight vigil ribbon of people across the Purple People Bridge.

The event will conclude with a human chain formed across the Purple People Bridge, linking Ohio and Kentucky together.

An Open Mic opportunity to let your voice be heard in speaking out about sexual violence. *Please respect participants during Speak Out by not filming/audio recording at that time.

Candles will be passed out during the Speak Out.  The participants are encouraged to carry the candles during the walk back across the river.  We walk in silence to remember the lives lost to violence.

The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to the violence against men, women, and children. Survivors of violence decorate shirts in triumph of their experiences.  Friends & Family of victims who have died because of violence decorate shirts in memory of their loved one.  We display the shirts to educate our community about the effects of violence.

The shirts are color coded to show the form of abuse and whether the victim survived.

* White – Died because of violence

* Yellow/Beige – Battered/Assaulted

*  Red/Pink/Orange – Rape/Sexual Assault

*  Blue/Green – Incest/Sexual Abuse

*  Purple/Lavender – Sexual Orientation

*  Black – Political Reasons
