Earth Day is Friday, April 22nd, Best Buy appeared on FOX19 NOW to offer up ideas on how to be more eco-friendly this year by making simple changes with Energy Star appliances.

Why it’s good for the environment. 

  • ENERGY STAR certified washers can save 3,000 gallons of water per year (each) 
  • ENERGY STAR certified dryers offer settings such as sensor drying which automatically shuts the machine off when the clothes are dry. 
  • An outdoor sprinkler system can help conserve up to 40 percent of water you’d normally use.  
  • If all refrigerators sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified, the cost savings would grow to nearly $700 million each year, and reduce carbon emissions to those from about 1.1 million vehicles. 
  • Rachio outdoor sprinkler system control can help conserve up to 40 percent of water use 

 Why it’s good for your wallet. 

  • ENERGY STAR certified washers can save up to $40 a year on your utility bills compared to a standard model. If you have a standard washer that is over 10 years old, it’s costing customers on average of $180 a year. 
  • By replacing your refrigerator with a new ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator, you can save between $35 and $300 on energy costs over its lifetime. 
  • Nest Thermostats can save 10-12 percent on heating bills, and 15 percent on cooling bills. These smart thermostats learn the temperatures you like, and create a custom schedules to be energy efficient. They also turn the settings down when your house is empty. 
  • LED bulbs can last more than 20 years, based on an average of three hours of use per day. Philips Hue bulbs offer features such as dimming, and limitless colors. 
  • Belkin Wemo Insight Switch monitors and controls gadgets from mobile devices. It sets schedules, turns products on and off and helps you find out what is used the most.
