Malia Obama, the oldest of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama's two daughters, will attend Harvard University.

She'll begin there in the fall of 2017, after taking a gap year, the White House announced Sunday. She'll be a member of the class of 2021.

Taking time off from school is not uncommon overseas and the practice is now becoming more popular in the United States.

Harvard is one of the many elite schools that encourages high school graduates to take a year off.

Several universities offer gap year programs and The American Gap Association said that enrollment rose 27-percent between 2012 and 2013.

Higher education experts tout the off-year as a way to travel, engage in a long-term special project or otherwise use the time in a constructive and meaningful way.

Some small studies suggest that taking time off may help prevent burnout.
