Cincinnati, OH (AP, FOX19) -

You can now have a day of fun just like Ferris Bueller, and you don't have to fake a cough to do so.

LinkedIn and REI are among several companies starting to offer employees 'freebie' days.

When you're feeling down, you're allowed to take the day to do whatever.

The caveat, you're supposed to use the time for self improvement, by getting outdoors or performing some other worthwhile task.

Company officials say the new policy is simple: happier workers are more productive.
