COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Bond was set at $1 million Tuesday for a 23-year-old murder suspect who claims he shot someone in self defense.

Earl W. Jones, 23, is accused of fatally shooting Kevin Lamar Neri in a residential front yard in the 2800 block of Overdale Drive late Monday, according to Colerain Township police.

He pleaded not guilty in a brief court hearing.

Several witnesses who saw the 8 p.m. offense confirmed the shooter's identity, officers wrote in a sworn statement filed with Hamilton County Municipal Court.

But a man who identified himself as Earl Jones called 911 after the shooting and claimed self-defense, according to a recording of the call.

"I just fired my weapon in self defense," the man said.

"OK," the dispatcher responded.

"An ambulance was called immediately by the people inside the house. I'm on my way to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department to turn myself in," he said.

"Do you want an officer to meet you there?" the dispatcher asked.

"Yes, please. I still have my weapon on me. What would they like me to do with it?"

She told him: "Just leave it in the glove box of your vehicle. You don't want to carry it into the sheriff's department."

"All right," the man responded.
