The success of microbreweries is booming, and now Kentucky is looking to cash in on the trend.
The Kentucky Agriculture Commission says it's studying the potential of growing hops in the state.
Hops production was actually widespread across the Bluegrass state, and particularly in Northern Kentucky, until the early 1900's. That's when inclement environmental factors and price changes forced hop farmers to relocate.
The University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University are working with the state’s agriculture commissioner on how to bring the business back.
According to MensJournal.com, about 97.8 percent of the hops in the U.S. are currently grown in the Pacific Northwest states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
