UC President Santa Ono opens up about mental illness

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono opened up about his own battle with mental illness Saturday night at the "1N5 fundraiser."

Ono was the special guest speaker at the event in Indian Hill. He told the crowd that he tried to take his life twice when he was younger.

"My message tonight: There should be no stigma for those with mental illness," Ono tweeted after the event. "I tried to take my own life 2X. We need to support each other."

Ono continued with a series of tweets highlighting the needs of enhancing health counseling programs at schools and colleges.

"Let's bring more light into the world," Ono finished one of his tweets. Below is his full list of tweets:

Ono has served as UC's president since August of 2012. According to the school's website, UC has achieved its largest enrollment in history, breaking enrollment records for three straight years.
