RISING SUN, IN (FOX19) - A hardware store is a total loss after fire tore through it early Monday, fire officials said.
No one was inside when flames broke out in the back of Valley Supply on State Route 262 about 1:30 a.m., said Rising Sun Fire Chief Kevin Armstrong.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing what sounded like gunshots.
Firefighters said it was actually the sound of paint cans exploding inside from the heat.
The blaze spread throughout the building and engulfed the structure when crews arrived.
The heat was so extreme, it took firefighters about 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Armstrong said.
One firefighter had to be treated on scene for exhaustion.
The cause remains under investigation. Fire officials say it's too soon to determine whether it's accidental or suspicious.
A damage estimate was not immediately available, but crews said the building is a total loss.
