Tri-State Company Distributed Killer Flu Virus

Cincinnati-area company distributed samples of killer flu virus

Public health officials say a Cincinnati-area company distributed samples of a killer flu virus that was sent to thousands of labs.

Officials say Meridian Bioscience Incorporated included samples of a 1957 killer strain of influenza in kits that labs use for quality-control tests.

The World Health Organization has urged the labs to destroy the samples because of the slight risk that it could trigger a global flu outbreak. The warning went out to nearly five-thousand labs in 18 countries, mostly in the United States.

Spokeswoman Brenda Hughes at Newtown-based Meridian Bioscience declined comment today.

The World Health Organization said there have been no reports of infections in laboratory workers associated with the distribution of the samples.
