CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Bengals pro bowl tight end Tyler Eifert had surgery to repair a loose ligament in his left ankle on Wednesday, according to a report by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

A doctor with knowledge of the situation told FOX19 NOW recovery for that procedure would be 12 to 16 weeks, or three to four months. In other words, Eifert could return in the middle of August at the earliest, or as late as the second full week of September.

The possibility remains for Eifert to miss the first one or two games of the season if he needs the full 16 weeks to recover. The Bengals open the season with back-to-back road trips against the Jets and Steelers. They return home in week three to host the defending world champion Denver Broncos.
