House debating bankruptcy reform bill

The House is debating a bill that will make it much harder to file for bankruptcy to avoid paying debts. The bill has long been a priority for the Republican majority as well as the banking and credit card industries.

They say it protects the system against fraud and abuse. To speed its passage, the GOP majority refused to let Democrats offer any amendments. Opponents say the bill will remove a safety net for those who have lost their jobs or face crushing medical bills. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee charged the bill "stabs the American people in the back."

The Senate passed the bill last month.
