NORTHERN KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

Construction crews have postponed a major pavement replacement project, originally scheduled for this weekend that could give motorists in Northern Kentucky headaches.

The project has been postponed for next weekend.

Beginning Friday night at 10 p.m., lane closures will take place throughout the weekend on southbound I-71/75. The closures will take place between Kyles Lane and Donaldson Road.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the weekend work will involve shifting lanes over on the southbound side so that a contraflow lane can be built for the upcoming northbound pavement replacement project.

“This section of roadway will be replaced to provide a safer and smoother ride for all those who travel on the I-71/I-75 interstate,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6.

On top of the paving project happening on the interstate, the work also includes joint replacements on four bridges.  The I-275 westbound to I-71/I-75 northbound ramp, the Buttermilk Pike Exit 186 and entrance ramps will also receive new pavement.

“This work will have major impacts to travel times; we are asking commuters to find alternate ways to travel and, if possible, avoid this work zone altogether,” Hans.

Motorists are encouraged to find an alternate southbound route this weekend as travel times could have a major impact.

“This will have significant impacts,” Nancy Wood with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet told FOX19 NOW.  "We’re telling people if you can avoid this area - stay away from it."

Southbound lanes are expected to reopen to the normal number of lanes by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Due to the roadwork, lane restrictions may be encountered on eastbound I-275 at the exit of I-71/75. Lane closures may extend throughout the length of the ramp entering northbound I-71/75. Restrictions should last until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

The stretch of interstate will be repaved throughout the summer. The completion date for the project is November 2016.
