KENTON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) - Starting Friday, drivers on Interstate I-71/75 near Dixie Highway will notice some major changes in their routes. '
Construction crews will begin a major pavement replacement project.
This project will remove old concrete on 2.2 miles of northbound lanes starting at the I-275 interchange to just before the US 25/ Dixie Highway.
Kentucky transportation officials say northbound traffic will be reduced to two lanes for most of the project.
A third northbound lane will be provided on the shoulder of the southbound lanes. It will be protected by concrete barrier wall on both sides.
Traffic in the contraflow lane will not be able to exit the highway.
This configuration will not impact southbound traffic as the normal number of southbound lanes will be provided in a shifted configuration.
"If you drive over that section it's riddled with a lot of potholes and old pavement and this is a maintenance project so we're going to replace that and get some new pavement down there and make it a lot smoother for that section of highway," said Nancy Wood, a spokeswoman with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
More than 77,000 vehicles daily use this section of I-71/I-75 northbound. T
The completion date for the project is November 2016.
