FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) -

Police arrested a man accused of hitting the back of a Covington SUV police cruiser and fleeing from the scene on June 2.

Abelino Dozal, 42, was arrested Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

K9 Officer Michael Lusardi and his dog, Ernie, were heading back from training, when a blue Chevrolet Silverado crossed over his lane on southbound Interstate 75 and side swiped the rear passenger side of the cruiser, police officials said.

The crash caused both vehicles to spin out of control and strike the median wall, police said. The suspect left the scene of the accident on SB I-75.

Lusardi was taken to St. Elizabeth Florence, where he was treated and released. K9, Ernie, was not injured.

The blue pickup truck was located on the same day by a resident in Bellevue, Ky.

A follow up investigation with the owner of the truck led to the identification of the driver. The owner had allowed a co-worker to use the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, the warrant was issued for Dozal.

Dozal is being held at the Boone County Detention Center.
