CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Bengals and running back Giovani Bernard have agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep Bernard in stripes through 2019.
The three-year extension is worth $15.5 million, according to USA Today's Tom Pelissero.
USA Today reports the 24-year-old running back will be due more than $6 million in 2016 and more than $9 million over the next two years.
"It's great to be able to extend our commitment with Gio," said head coach Marvin Lewis. "It's all a part of what I keep saying -- draft the right players, develop them, and retain them. We're excited about the great things Gio will continue to add to our offense."
Bernard had one year left on his rookie deal entering the 2016-17 season.
"I love Cincinnati and want to be here for as long as I can," Bernard said. "This moment is about having a future. It's a secure feeling knowing I'll be here and can help this team win. I can't picture myself in anything but orange and black."
The former UNC Tar Heel rushed for 730 yards on 154 carries for an average of 4.7 yards a carry last season. He also compiled 472 receiving yards on 49 receptions.
