A case of mistaken identity has caught a local professor in the cross hairs of outrage revolving around the Stanford rape case.

Stanford swimmer Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in jail despite an emotional account from the victim. The victim was allegedly unconscious at the time she was assaulted on the university campus after a party.

Turner's childhood friend by the name of Leslie Rasmussen wrote a letter to the judge defending Turner.

A Xavier University professor happens to have the name Leslie Rasmussen but has nothing to do with the case at Stanford University.

The XU professor says the mistaken identity has led to her receiving hate mail and even threats.

"I've really tried to separate myself from all of the content and understand this isn't about me, Leslie Rasmussen, this is just about this crazy thing that people do online and I need to separate myself from that," Rasmussen told FOX19 NOW.

Rasmussen, who ironically teaches social media at XU, has had to deactivate her social media accounts since the story broke.
