TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Ohio for the first time is declaring western Lake Erie impaired by the toxic algae that has fouled drinking water and closed beaches in recent years. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's announcement Thursday comes amid a federal lawsuit over whether part of the shallowest of the Great Lakes should be declared impaired. Environmental groups hope it will pave the way for increased pollution regulations, but state leaders don't expect that to happen.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio judges and the state prison system are at odds over a new law meant to reduce prison time for low-level offenders who commit minor probation violations. At issue is a mandate capping the amount of time judges can send offenders convicted of minor crimes to prison for violations like missing counseling appointments and committing misdemeanors. The prison system had counted on the law's decreasing Ohio's inmate population by about 400 this year and as much as 1,100 next year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The co-chairman of the Republican National Committee is chastising Ohio gubernatorial candidate Mary Taylor for an ad he calls "false and misleading" and disputing her claim to assume President Donald Trump's mantle. In a statement Thursday, Robert Paduchik called Taylor a political opportunist who was "missing in action" during the 2016 campaign. Taylor's campaign said Paduchik is one of DeWine's "D.C. Swamp cronies" who's engaging in "name-calling and slander" to distract from DeWine's record.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio House has approved a bill to cut state funding to cities and villages by the amount they collect from traffic enforcement cameras. reports the Senate will now consider legislation sponsored by Cincinnati Republican Rep. Bill Seitz. The House passed the bill Wednesday on a 65-19 vote.
