FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A bill limiting how much outside attorneys can earn when hired by the state has been passed by Kentucky's Republican lawmakers. The measure passed on Thursday, despite objections that it would hurt the attorney general's ability to win large awards from corporate wrongdoers. The House voted 57-36 to send the bill to Republican Gov. Matt Bevin.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Government officials in Kentucky could discuss public business on their personal devices without having to disclose under a surprise amendment moving quickly through the state legislature. A legislative committee amended House Bill 302 on Wednesday to change the definition of public record to say it "shall not include" calls, text messages and emails if they are sent or received on a device paid for with private funds or a nongovernment email account.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky man has been formally charged in the fatal shooting of a police officer last week. John Russell Hall was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on charges including murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, among others. WYMT-TV reports Hall is accused of killing Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton.

LIMA, Ohio (AP) - A former Miss Kentucky who tried to smuggle a small amount of marijuana into an Ohio prison for her boyfriend won't have to spend time behind bars. The Lima News reports 28-year-old Kia Hampton, of Louisville, Kentucky, received probation Wednesday during a hearing in Allen County in western Ohio. Authorities say Hampton was found with a marijuana-filled balloon at the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution in May 2017.
