SYMMES TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

A man is held at the Boone County jail Wednesday morning awaiting extradition to Hamilton County after authorities say he shot his ex-wife five times and then casually walked away.

Edward Hopes, 60, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, faces one count of attempted murder after being taken into custody on Petersburg Road in Hebron about 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Four hours earlier, deputies responded to a reports of shots fired at Harper's Point Apartments off Montgomery Road about 1:30 p.m.

Court records show Hopes waited outside for his wife and attacked her while she walked to her car.

"The victim advised she saw (Hopes) approach her and pull a small handgun from his right front pants pocket and point it at her," sheriff's officials wrote in a sworn statement filed with Hamilton County Municipal Court.

Then, they wrote, she told them Hopes "stated 'this is it' and began to shoot the handgun at her."

Hopes kept shooting, striking her five times as she fell to the ground and turned onto her side, all while he continued firing, records state.

“When he was turning her over I could see blood so she was clearly injured and like I said I was preparing to see an execution style killing,” said David Bortz who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.

"After the shooting ceased, (Hopes) casually walked away, according to several witnesses," sheriff's officials wrote.

The woman called 911 and told dispatchers her ex-husband had shot her, records state. She also told three witnesses.

The incident was captured on closed circuit television at the guard shack at the entrance to Harper's Point, they noted.

A motive in the attack was not disclosed.

The woman was taken to Bethesda North Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil said Hopes is the ex-husband of the victim and had no other ties to the area.

Through the investigation, detectives became aware that Hopes expressed threats of suicide and possible harm to law enforcement, according to sheriff's spokesman Michael Robison.

No one was hurt taking him into custody.

"I want to commend all the deputies on both sides of the (Ohio) river who were able to bring this suspect into custody in very short order and ensure he's behind bars where he belongs," Neil said.

A nearby LA Fitness was briefly on lock down following the shooting but has since reopened, a worker told FOX19 NOW.
