With the weather finally warming up, a lot of people will be wearing flip-flops.

These shoes are bad for arches, and diabetics run the risk of seriously injuring their feet without knowing it.

Dr. Kristin Titko with UC Health explains:

  • Lack of support causes arch strain
  • Scrunching toes to keep flip flops on, causes calluses and corns
  • Looseness of the flip flops will alter gait causing muscle fatigue, tendinitis, joint  pain
  • Flip flops leave the feet exposed to foreign objects (particularly dangerous in people with diabetes)
  • Lack of support makes gait more unstable and poor posture
  • Without heel counter control, increased friction causes painful heel rim calluses and fissures
  • Tripping hazard when the front of the flip flop gets caught up on something.

For more information, UC is hosting a free foot health seminar 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and again 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Both events will be at West Chester Hospital, Plaza Conference Room, Level A, 7700 University Dr., West Chester.
