Expert: Large snake spotted in Hamilton is harmless reptile

Snake expert comments on python rumors

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Residents of Hamilton will be relieved to learn that a large snake spotted throughout their community is only a harmless reptile, according to a local snake expert.

A family recently snapped a photo of what they claimed to be a python on their backyard fence, after that, word of the potentially dangerous snake spread through the neighborhood.

FOX19 NOW asked Dereck Burnett, owner of A-list Animal reptile shop, to take a closer look at the photo. He said the large snake is likely a black rat snake – a common reptile in the state of Ohio.

"The black rat snakes, especially in the Hamilton area you'll find quite a few of them. They are there to control rodent populations," said Burnett.

A black rat snake bite would hardly require medical attention, Burnett says. In fact, the snakes are actually a positive part of the environment.

"Don't kill them. They are there for a reason. If you need them removed, there are a lot of people who will come and remove those snakes," said Burnett.
