Police: Man booked for murder tries to grab officer's gun in interview room

WESTWOOD, OH (FOX19) -

A man facing murder charges is now adding assault to a police officer charges after he allegedly tried to grab the officer's gun in an interview room.

Thomas Robinson is charged with the murder of 17-year-old Reno Armstrong Jr. on June 17. Armstrong Jr. was found shot and killed inside an apartment off Montana Ave. in Westwood. 

Cincinnati Police arrested Robinson on Tuesday and said the suspect had a loaded 9-millimeter on him at the time of the arrest.

Officers took Robinson in for questioning and that is when the struggle occurred. 

"After the interview he was being transferred from investigators to uniformed officers," Lt. Steve Saunders said. "During the course of that transfer he made an attempt to grab the officers' firearms from their holsters."

Saunders told FOX19 NOW the incident last 8 to 10 seconds.

"In the course of that struggle he was tased and subdued very quickly," Saunders said. "It was a very tense situation for a period of time."

Police say an officer was struck in the face, causing injuries to his lip. 

Funeral services for Armstrong Jr. are scheduled for Tuesday, June 28.
