Shoe chain says 1.4 million customer accounts exposed in data breach
DSW Shoe Warehouse officials say thieves who accessed the firm's database obtained one-point-four million credit card numbers and the names on those accounts.
That's ten times more than investigators estimated last month. DSW says it has contact information for about half of those people and has started sending letters notifying them of the thefts.
The thefts happened at 108 stores in 25 states between November and February. A list of the stores is available on the company's Web site.
A statement from DSW says the stolen information did not include home addresses or personal identification numbers. Besides the credit card numbers, the thieves also obtained driver's license numbers and checking account numbers from 96-thousand transactions involving checks.
