President Bush Reacts To Choice

Bush reacts to choice of Ratzinger as pope

President Bush is describing the new pope as a "man of great wisdom and knowledge" -- and "a man who serves the Lord."

Bush commented as he returned to the White House today from a trip to Illinois. Standing alongside his wife, the president recalled listening to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's homily at the funeral of Pope John Paul. He said "his words touched our hearts and the hearts of millions."

Bush said he and others around the world will pray that the new pope shows "continued strength and wisdom" as he leads the church.

At the State Department, meanwhile, a spokesman said the US welcomes the announcement of the new pope -- and looks forward to working with him to "promote human dignity across the world."
