Sheriff: Why Wasn't Trunk Searched

Sheriff investigating why officers didn't search car trunk

The Hamilton County sheriff says he is investigating why his officers had a car towed but failed to search its trunk for more than a month before a body was found inside.

Sheriff Simon Leis says his officers failed to follow procedures by not searching the locked trunk where the body of 49-year-old David Mollberg was found yesterday.

Authorities were aware that the Colerain Township man had been reported missing before his car was towed on March eleventh.

Investigators said it appeared that Mollberg had driven to a Hamilton County park near the Ohio River, gotten into the car's trunk and pulled the lid shut before shooting himself in the head with a sawed-off shotgun.

Officers forced open the trunk and found the body yesterday after noticing an odor.
