Poll: Americans Unsure

Poll finds Americans unsure of new pope

A quick poll finds the jury's still out in the US on the new pope. Nearly six-in-ten American Catholics who were surveyed told researchers they don't know enough to have a positive or negative opinion of Pope Benedict.

The Gallup poll for USA Today and CNN indicates that 47 percent of American Catholics don't know if he'll move Catholicism in the right or wrong direction.

More than six-in-ten respondents say they think he'll do more to unite than divide the church. And, two-thirds say they are confident in his handling of the molestation problem well. Researchers polled 616 Catholics.
