Underpass Virgin Mary

Hundreds flock to underpass where some see Virgin Mary in salt stain

A yellow and white stain on a Chicago underpass is drawing a steady stream of people, some of whom claim what they see is a miracle.

It's located on a concrete wall along the emergency turnoff area under the Kennedy Expressway. And many say they see the image of the Virgin Mary in it. Beside the stain is an artist's rendering of the Virgin Mary embracing the late Pope John Paul.

Since Monday hundreds have gone to visit the site. Some kneel there, others leave flowers and candles. Illinois transportation officials say the image is likely the result of salt run-off. Still, they say they don't plan to remove it.
