Protest of racist flyer is misinterpreted
When a columnist at the University of Cincinnati's student newspaper decided to take a stand against racism, she was immediately noticed -- and accused of being a racist herself.
Simone Monet-Williams saw a flyer on a UC bulletin board that screamed "Don't have sex with blacks ... avoid AIDS" and decided to take a stand against the statement in the News Record, where she is opinion editor. The paper reprinted the flyer next to her column, which compared the neo-Nazi group that distributed the flyer on its Web site to terrorists.
UC spokesman Greg Hand says the university was inundated with calls from around the country thinking the university was promoting the sentiment though the opposite was true.
