CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Local YMCA and city pools are banning mermaids for the summer of 2016.
No, we're not talking about Ariel or Aquamarine. We are talking about a popular new swimming device for kids: A mono-fin mermaid tail that slips over swimmers' feet and legs.
The mermaid tails, which cost an average of $35, have caused safety concerns for officials with the Greater Cincinnati YMCA and Cincinnati Rec Commission. The toys are prohibited at all YMCA and city pools.
"After looking at them, it does, it binds your legs together and if you get into trouble you have no way to get out of it," said Julie Hausek with the YMCA of greater Cincinnati. "There's a balance between safety and fun."
The call of the mermaid may be hard to resist, but, unless you're a fish, legs are better for swimming. Still, if you do buy one for a child, there are mermaid do's and don'ts to help keep your kids safe. Click here to tips from the Fin Fun Mermaid.[endif]
