AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -

A 5-year-old girl who was shot in a drive-by shooting in Avondale last year is doing well, family members say.

Martaisha Thomas was four years old when she was was shot in the head and critically hurt in a drive-by on Ridgeway Avenue near Reading Road.

She is now ready to start school in September.

Her family said they're excited to be able to smile and laugh now that she is doing well after being released from Children’s Hospital in November.

Thomas's grandfather Donald Fairbanks, Jr said the first three to four months were tough, but she has learned to walk and talk again.

Darnell Hicks was arrested and charged with attempted murder for the shooting. Witnesses at the time told police a car drove by Ridgeway spraying bullets.

Court records show he has a jury trial in September.

One witness told the 911 operator that day, “They rolled passed as everyone was sitting on the steps and starting shooting. We thought it was fire crackers. Everyone ran and we turned around and the little girl got shot in the head.”

Fairbanks said he has not heard from Hicks or his family. He knows the suspects mother and said when he sees her out she tends to drop her head.

When we asked Martaisha how she is doing she replied, “Good.”

Fairbanks told us his granddaughter is strong. As he said that, Martaisha made a muscle to show everyone how strong she is.
