In less than one week of camp, the Bengals were down to their third option at tight end, but they are seeing progress with Pro Bowl TE Tyler Eifert and backup TE Tyler Kroft, who is now expected to return by the season opener in New York against the Jets.
“Hopefully this is our low point and we’ll get healthier from here,” said Lewis on Kroft, who is out with a knee injury he suffered this week. “We don’t want to minimize it, but (Kroft) will be ready when it’s time to go. You put the roster together as best as you can to try to be ready for those injuries and you knock on wood and hopefully don’t get too many in one position.”

“He’s doing well,” said Lewis. “We’re going to do more functional work now and it’ll give us a pretty good indication in the next three weeks or so where he is.”
With Eifert and Kroft projected to miss the preseason, third string TE C.J. Uzomah, a fifth-round pick out of Auburn last season, will see the majority of the snaps.
