Cincinnati Head Start program shuts down because of crime

Weeks after a Head Start teacher was robbed across the street, officials have temporarily shut down the program in one of Cincinnati's toughest neighborhoods because of drugs and violence nearby.

Officials say they hope moving the preschoolers out of the area for the next few months will give the school and the Over the Rhine neighborhood time to mobilize against crime.

Police have added more patrols and increased drug arrests but the head of the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Action Agency says help that was expected from the private sector never arrived.

The program's 51 preschoolers will be bused to a center in another neighborhood. Officials hope to reopen the Over the Rhine center in late August.
