Former GOP lawmaker urges Congress to scale back part of Patriot Act
A former Republican congressman is urging lawmakers to limit a key feature of the Patriot Act. Former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr testified on Capitol Hill that the anti-terror law's so-called "sneak and peek" provision should be scaled back.
That portion of the law allows searches without notification until a later date. Barr says such warrants are needed against suspected terrorists, but the government's usage of them in other areas needs to be limited.
Supporters of the provision said such concerns are overblown. Barr wants the law changed to require a specific time limit between the search and the notification -- and for it to be limited to national security issues.
