CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The death penalty trial is underway for a Hamilton County father accused of torturing and brutally killing his 2-year-old daughter.

Jury selection began Monday and is expected to be finalized Tuesday in the trial of Glen Bates, 34.

Opening statements would begin on Wednesday.

Bates and his girlfriend, Andrea Bradley, 30, face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder charges in the 2015 homicide of their daughter,Glenara Bates.

Both rejected plea deals that would have removed the option of death sentences.

If Bates had pleaded guilty Monday, he would have 15 years to life in prison.

Glenara Bates died in March 2015 after Cincinnati police said she was abused, starved and tortured.

The case led to two Hamilton County Department of Jobs and Family Services case workers' resignations and a wrongful death suit against the county because Glenara Bates was returned to the home after being removed.

Bradley will be tried separately starting on Oct. 3, court records show.
