LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - "Giacomo" defied the odds and won the Kentucky Derby in a gigantic upset.
"Giacomo" ran down "Afleet Alex" in the final strides to generate a huge payoff -- one of the biggest in Derby history. The horse -- named for rock star Sting's son -- was ridden by Mike Smith.
It was Smith's first Derby win in 12 attempts. "Closing Argument," another long shot, finished second with Afleet Alex third in the largest Derby field since 20 started in 1984.
Giacomo returned $102.60 on a two dollar bet to win.
Trainer Nick Zito came up short despite running five horses in the race, including the favorite "Bellamy Road."
