CARROLL COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

Northbound Interstate 71 will be shut down just north of KY 36 until at least noon Thursday due to a crash involving two semis, including one that overturned and spilled hazardous material.

A FedEx semi overturned in northbound lanes and was hit by a second semi about 5:30 a.m., according to Kentucky State Police.

The FedEx truck was hauling hazardous materials that spilled, said Trooper Josh Lewis, police spokesman.

It's not clear yet exactly which chemicals were on the semi, he said.

Authorities did confirm one is hydrochloric acid.

Motorists are being detoured off northbound I-71 at exit 44, where they can take US 42 and KY Highway 1039 to re-enter the highway at exit 55.

“There is an orange liquid leaking from the vehicle. It’s not a large amount. With the traffic being detoured around the area, we do not believe there is any danger to the public," Lawson said.

Emergency management officials responded to the scene about an hour after the crash occurred.

They are still accessing whether they need to contact the EPA to also come out to help guide the cleanup,Lawson said.

Further complicating the situation: the cab on the Fed Ex truck is entangled with the cable barrier.

Troopers are not supposed to cut cable barriers unless absolutely necessary, Lawson said.

So they are waiting for state transportation officials to arrive at the scene and direct them how to free the cab.

Southbound I-71 remains open.

So far, officials do not anticipate having to shut it down, according to Lawson.

The driver of the FedEx truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The other semi driver was not hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.

Carroll County is about an hour south of downtown Cincinnati.
