CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A Hamilton County judge on Wednesday refused to let a man withdraw his guilty plea in the 2013 shooting death of Porshia Brooks and sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

Jaleel Markeith Smith-Riley, 23, collapsed when Common Pleas Court Judge Charles Kubicki Jr. announced the ruling.

Minutes earlier, the convicted killer sobbed as he apologized for shooting Brooks, 20, and her boyfriend during a Norwood robbery.

"I'm so sorry. I made a mistake," he cried.

Smith-Riley announced last month he wanted to take back his guilty plea, one that took the death penalty of the table.

But the judge refused and ordered that his plea would stand.

Norwood police say Smith-Riley and two other suspects shot Brooks and her boyfriend Aron Martin, 21, while the two sat in a parked car on Carthage Avenue in November 2013.

Brooks died, but Martin survived.

A second suspect is already in jail in another state, and a third is dead.
