Wine Shipments

Supporters toast high court ruling on out-of-state wine shipments

Wine lovers in Ohio and other states that prohibit out-of-state wine shipments are cheering a U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning the bans.

An attorney for wineries called today the "best day for wine lovers since the invention of the corkscrew." He said it shows early American principles of free trade carry on, even in the age of the Internet. The five-to-four decision struck down laws in New York and Michigan banning out-of-state wine shipments.

In all, 24 states have laws barring interstate shipments. But the head of Michigan's liquor board sees the ruling as a setback, affecting the panel's efforts to keep minors from obtaining liquor.
