FOX19 - Recipes using pears are great additions for Thanksgiving. Suburban Chef Barbie Hahn offers these two: A pear "toddy" and a pear/ginger tart.

Hotty Toddy- Lemon Pear Toddy

  • 1 1/2 cups pear nectar
  • 1/4 honey
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup pear vodka
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pear and lemon slices for garnish

Warm pear nectar,  honey and salt to a simmer. Remove from heat, add vodka, brandy, lemon juice and vanilla. Pour into glasses and garnish with lemon and pear slices.

Ginger Pear Puff

  • 10'' pie pan
  • 3 large pears
  • 2 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 T fresh lemon juice
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup  milk
  • 1/2 cup unbleached white flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 T melted butter

Peel quarter and slice and core pears/ Slice pears into 1/4 inch thickness, toss with ginger and lemon juice in the pie pan. in a different bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla and melted butter until smooth.

Pour over pears and bake for 35-40 minutes. Custard will be just firm and set.

While puff is baking, make a glaze.  In a saucepan heat 1/4 ginger or apricot preserves, with 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 2 T pear vodka and 1 T butter.

Let puff cool for 5 minutes then, brush with the glaze.

This is great served warm or at room temperature.
