Plaza Sale

Souvenir-hunting horde picks at the Plaza's carcass

Fans of the Plaza Hotel started gathering for the tag sale before dawn. By midday, if you wanted to get some Plaza dishes or mirrors or linens or furniture, the line was nearly three hours long.

The fabled 800-room hotel closed last month. It's undergoing a renovation that will turn it into an apartment house with about 150 rooms. Julia Felix bought 96 dollars worth of linens and slippers with "The Plaza" embroidered on them, in remembrance of an evening she spent at the Beaux-Arts landmark.

Not everyone was thrilled with the merchandise, Steven Goldberg bought what he called two "cheaply-made" lamps. He said, "After waiting in line for two hours, I had to grab something."
