Mindful meditation: easing stress & pain during the holidays

FOX19 -

This holiday season, some people are juggling Christmas shopping and out-of-town guests along with breast cancer treatment.

Rebecca Irwin with the Cancer Support Community is teaching about the practice of Mindful Meditation and how this technique is helping patients.

Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose in a non-judgmental way:

-Focusing on one thing at a time, frequently your breath

-Slowing down and observing what is happening in each moment, without judging ourselves or others

-You can have seated, or formal meditation or work towards being mindful in your everyday life (folding laundry is an incredibly mindful opportunity)

Benefits of mindfulness include:

-Emotional Equanimity (balance)

-Reduced anxiety and depression

-Help with pain management

-Fostering a sense of self-compassion and compassion for others

Improving your meditation:

-Take breaks Plan breaks for yourself and/or your family to simply be.

-Don’t judge yourself if you don’t get to everything you planned. Think about what’s most important for you this season.

-Take time to slow down listen to your body.

-Stop, Look & Listen

-If you’re feeling overwhelmed take a moment to Stop what you’re doing, Look around and notice your surroundings, & Listen to the sound that you hear in the moment.

Cancer Support Community offers a Mindfulness Meditation class on Mondays 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Research shows that meditation can help reduce anxiety, stress, blood pressure, chronic pain, and insomnia as well as regain a sense of control. This class is about wakefulness, the art of paying ttention to what we think, feel, and experience. All programs are free of charge and open to anyone affected by cancer.
