New York City officials have charged a nine-year old girl in the fatal stabbing of a playmate after they allegedly fought over a ball.
The eleven-year old victim, identified as Queen Washington from Brooklyn, was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife. The girls were playing in the suspect's apartment and her mother was out visiting a neighbor. A police spokesman says the suspect, whose name is being withheld, is charged with manslaughter.
The spokesman tells the New York Times he doesn't know of any younger child ever facing such a charge.
The victim's grandmother tells the Times she can't understand how this could happen. Prosecutors say because the girl is under age 14, the case will be processed in the family court system.
